GIN is a new bistro in the Jordaan providing what they call a “funky food experience” with creative fusion dishes paired with flavorful wines.
GIN NEO BISTRO & WINES
The name might bring to mind a cocktail bar serving gin and tonics, but this “neo bistro” is not a cocktail bar. GIN refers to the name of the founder Jin Hu, who is trained as a sommelier. He has assembled a team of creative chefs and professionals recruited from celebrated restaurants like Librije, Noma and Vinkeles.
The team is young and thus bring fresh vibes to the food and the mood. Cool art on the walls, hip hop on the speakers and definitely a unique and very creative twist to the food.
GIN serves a set menu of 4-5 courses for dinner each night Monday through Saturday. I would probably describe the menu as creative fusion, but that would only be the tip of the iceberg. Some ingredients are gathered from the wild, some are fermented in house. Dishes are meant to convey feelings, memories and emotions. There is acute attention to the source of the products and the seasons.
We sampled dishes of fish, meats, fruits and vegetables, all creatively presented and full of a delicious mix of Asian and western flavors and ingredients. One of the highlights of our meal was the pineapple dessert served in a cloud of smoke contained by a glass cloche which was sealed with a bouquet garni – creative, interesting and above all – delicious. Each dish is perfectly paired with amazing wines by the sommelier.
On Sunday GIN is open for brunch. But this is not just any old brunch, small bites are served every 10 minutes. And each bite is created from leftovers from the week to prevent food waste. How wonderful!
