The lovely garden out back is what most people first notice about this museum, but step inside and experience a journey back in time.
Museum Willet Holthuysen
Built around 1685, this historical house on the Herengracht is one of the only ones in Amsterdam that is fully furnished.
Explore the beautiful blue and gold ballroom, gawk at the fine table laid for dinner in the dining room and admire the lavish wallpapers and stained glass windows throughout the house.
Many people recommend the audiotour, which is available in English, German, Dutch, Russian, French, Spanish and Italian. This gives you a deeper understanding into how this amazing house was used over the years. I enjoyed the videos you can watch in different rooms, explaining details about the house. I loved the explanation about the traditions of dinner parties in the late 1800s.
The gardens are most beautiful in the spring and summer but in the winter the house is decorated for Christmas with beautiful ornaments.
Helpful hint: If you plan to visit more than three museums within the year, we recommend the Museumkaart for locals. The price of €59 is worth it as entrance to each museum is around €15-20 for adults. If you are visiting Amsterdam take a look at the iAmsterdam card which gives you free transport around the city as well as free entry to many museums and attractions in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Check here for more information and to purchase the iAmsterdam card online. Another option is the Holland Pass which grants free access to several museums and attractions, as well as discounts to others. Check here for more information on the Holland Pass.
