The Allard Pierson Museum is an archaeological museum in the center of Amsterdam. They have a fascinating collection of ancient art and antiquities.
You’ll find lots of ancient Egyptian pieces as well as Greek statues and object, artifacts from the Roman Empire and items from the Near East. The ancient Egyptian rooms are the highlight, you’ll find mummies, sarcophagi, masks, clothing, charms and temple models.
The museum is named for the first professor of classical archaeology at the University of Amsterdam. He started the collection of plaster casts. The second professor of archaeology was Jan Six. He had an excellent collection of books and antique objects which became the foundation of the museum’s collection. The collection grew over time from donations, gifts, loans and purchases of artifacts and documents.
Visit this fascinating museum if you like antiquities. I really like ancient Egyptian collections and this one does not disappoint!
