The Museum Card or Museumkaart is a wonderful item for anyone who loves art and culture. The card gives access to over 400 museums across the Netherlands.
The Museumkaart is good for use as an Amsterdam museum pass but can also be used across the Netherlands. The Museum Card is currently priced at €59 for one year. This gives you access to 400+ musea in the Netherlands including more than 40 in and around Amsterdam. The Museum Card does not always grant free access to special exhibits, but it usually allows you to skip many of the lines.
A short list of the musea that can be visited with the Amsterdam Museum card include:
- Rijksmuseum
- Museum Van Loon
- EYE Film Museum
- Amsterdam Museum
- Verzetsmuseum
- Stedelijk Museum
- Scheepvaart Museum
- Museum Het Rembrandthuis
- Van Gogh Museum
- Huis Marseille Photography Museum
- Hermitage Museum
- Pijpenkabinet
- Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis
- FOAM
You can order the Museum Card online or at most museums in Amsterdam including the Tropenmuseum, Rijksmuseum, EYE, Museum Van Loon and many others. If you purchase the card at a museum you will get a temporary card, good for a few weeks. You then need to register online with your home address and upload a photo of yourself. You should receive your photo ID Museumkaart in the mail within a week.
Options for Visitors to Amsterdam
Staying in Amsterdam only for a short time? The Museumkaart is really meant for locals. Another option is to purchase the iAmsterdam card for 24, 48 or 72 hours which gives you free transport around the city as well as free entry to many museums and attractions in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Check here for more information and to purchase the iAmsterdam card online. Another option is the Holland Pass which grants free access to several museums and attractions, as well as discounts to others. Check here for more information on the Holland Pass.
I love my Museumkaart and buy one each year! It is a great way to add a little culture and inspiration to your day. Meeting a friend near Museumplein? Pop into the Stedelijk or Van Gogh Museum for an hour then dash over to de Pijp for a coffee and cake. Have some time on your lunch break? Take a look at the latest photography exhibit at Huis Marseille or FOAM. A visit to the museum doesn’t have to take all day and you can always return for free with the Museum card.
Locals can also look into the We Are Public and Subbacultcha memberships for free or discounted access to exhibits.
Check the website for more info: Museumkaart or for the iAmsterdam card here.
