The best burger is such a personal thing. Maybe you like yours salty and I like mine spicy. Perhaps you prefer your burger to be pink in the center and I like mine well done. Here are some of the top burger restaurants in Amsterdam. Try a few and pick your favorite? The list is in no particular order.

Burgermeester

This is not just your ordinary boring hamburger a la McDonalds. Lots of tasty options means there is something for everyone, and there are also three locations to choose from in the city. Try the lamb burger with Spanish chorizo or a salmon burger with creme fraiche and asparagus. There are vegetarian options as well, like the felafel burger topped with feta and watermelon. No fries on the side at this joint, but the burgers are so filling you won’t miss them. Prices are reasonable and you have the choice of a mini burger or regular size. Or go wild and try the mini trio!

Simon, also known as The Beef Chief, serves up our top tasty burger in Amsterdam. His burgers are not just our favorite, they were also voted best burger in Amsterdam at the Burger Beer Battle.

What makes The Beef Chief’s burgers the best? He is the master of combining savory, salty and spicy flavors to make a mouthwatering creation that will blow your socks off. While The Beef Chief has a variety of burger options, we always go for the KimChief if possible, with spicy homemade kimchi and sriracha. Dreamy.

Conveniently located all over the city, you can find The Butcher at De Foodhallen, on Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp, in Noord below the A’dam Toren and even near the Dam. This burger bar offers several sandwiches that are sure to satisfy different tastes. Perusing the menu is entertaining, with clever item names referring to films and pop culture. The Butcher is a great choice for a casual pre-drinks meal or an after-drinks “soak up the alcohol, prevent the hangover” treat. Or maybe you can even get that hangover started here, there is a secret hidden cocktail bar in the back of the location in de Pijp.

Cafe Kostverloren

Cafe Kostverloren is a friendly neighborhood cafe in Oud-West along a wide canal. People are drawn to their burgers which are dubbed the Ladyburger and Mannenburger due to their respective sizes. Kostverloren also serves up a weekly special hamburger, as well as a veggie burger. In addition to burgers, hungry diners will find yummy nachos, sandwiches, salads, soups and creative entrees. Or just go for drinks on their big terrace.

Brouwerij Troost

With the same owners as Cafe Kostverloren it is no surprise that Troost would have great burgers as well. We’ve sampled the Classic as well as the veggie burger and both were scrumptious. Their house IPA makes a good pairing.

If you are vegetarian or just need a break from the beef, you really must try Troost’s lentil and quinoa veggie burger. Topped with fresh pickles and sriracha-truffle mayo it is a taste sensation.

Now Troost is in 3 locations around the city and you can grab their yummy burgers and other delicious dishes and wash them down with handcrafted brews.

Cafe Walvis

Hit up Cafe de Walvis in the Spaarndammerbuurt for the delicious burger. This huge hamburger is so good that it could become an addiction and leave you looking like a walvis yourself. The burger is very flavorful with super crispy fries on the side. Yummy! And Walvis also offers a vegetarian burger as well. When the sun is shining grab a table outside, or go inside the cozy cafe when the weather is crap. Doesn’t matter, as long as you have a yummy burger in hand!

Cannibale Royale

Serving meals until after midnight, Cannibale Royale is one of your top choices for a delicious late night burger. If your dining companions are not in the mood for a burger they can go for the ribs, lamb chops or even a salad.

Cannibale Royale is a great place to dine after you’ve already been out for a few drinks earlier in the evening. You can continue to booze it up while relaxing for a good meal in the dimly lit but nicely decorated space. Afterward, dance off the calories at Disco Dolly next door to the location on Handboogstraat.

At their second location in de Pijp they are even open for lunch, so grab a seat outside for a burger on the terrace.

The Young Pretenders

The Young Pretenders were close contenders at the Burger Beer Battle. We absolutely loved their spicy Punk Seoul Burger with bacon and cheese. Don’t tell The Beef Chief but we had a really hard time deciding on our favorite.

Geflipt offers creative tasty burgers at their two warm and cozy locations. Get your burger topped with blue cheese or a spicy chutney. They have a chicken burger and veggie burger too. Go with fries or coleslaw on the side. They also have grilled cheese sandwiches and local beers in bottle

Bar Huf

Bar Huf is a cozy and rustic cafe, with exposed brick walls, wood beams and bright red and white checkered tablecloths. Huf serves food until late which is welcome after your work borrel went a bit longer than expected. And the best news is that they have an awesome burger, served with a big bowl of crispy fries with ketchup and mayo.

Try to secure a reservation or pop in on a weeknight. The small space lends a charming feeling to the restaurant but also means that it fills up very quickly.

Thrill Grill

Located near the Albert Cuypmarkt and in Oud West, Thrill Grill is a good spot to sit down and enjoy a burger and fries before hitting the bars. Try the truffle parmesan fries and wash it all down with a milkshake, American style.

Thrill Grill doesn’t take reservations so you might have to wait for a seat on their terrace in the afternoon sun. But they do have a full bar!

Smokin’ Barrels

I’ve had a few burgers at this cool cafe in Oost and they’ve all been delicious. Check out this crazy burger plus half a lobster! There’s a creative burger of the month and rotating specials plus they have local beers on tap. Smokin Barrels is a great place for a casual date or fun night with friends.

If you are feeling hungry in the East of Amsterdam we recommend the big burger at Ysbreeker. Add a beer and a side of fries for a hearty meal. It’s not a trendy burger bar like some of the others but the setting is solid. This cafe is lovely both inside and out, and the huge terrace on the Amstel cannot be beat. In the summer it catches the afternoon sun perfectly. Stop by for dinner and drinks after a visit to the nearby Hermitage Museum.

Burger Bar

Burger Bar serves up tasty hamburgers that you build yourself from their list of topping options. They even have a portobello mushroom burger as a vegetarian choice. Their fries are a nice crispy accompaniment. The Burger Bar locations are a bit touristy and can be crazy busy, but still provide a good alternative for a burger especially late at night (they are open until 4am on weekends). The locations at Warmoesstraat and in de Pijp are the largest and nicest and also serve wine and beer, but aren’t open as late as the other ones.

Burgerlijk Amsterdams

This tiny burger cafe in the Negen Straatjes and OudWest is really good! At first glance the menu has a familiar feel, reminding me a little of Burger Bar in some ways, but so much better. Choose a beef, chicken or veggie burger and then decide what toppings you like. Get a serving of their crispy fries on the side, they have the potato skins still on them, just the way mama makes them. Yum!

The burgers we’ve had here were perfectly cooked, moist and tasty. We highly recommend trying this burger joint. And it’s easy to get their burgers delivered by Foodora or Deliveroo.

Frits Burgers & Bier

Hungry? Go for a burger with onion rings or fries on the side. Feeling healthy? Skip the fries and go for grilled veggies instead! Frits  also has tasty salads. We enjoyed the spicy “chilli” burger, and we like that they have a changing selection of beers (including locals like Oedipus Brewing) as well as wine and G&Ts.

Ellis Gourmet Burger has branches in Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and beyond. The Prinsengracht location sits on one of the prettiest corners and has a huge terrace when the weather is nice. In addition to a wide range of burger offerings they have nachos, onion rings and jacket potatoes. Don’t skip the milkshakes!

This restaurant in the Ink Hotel may not be known as a burger cafe, but they serve up a hearty version. Topped with a fried egg and melted cheese it is sure to fill you up and sober you up. I think of it as breakfast and dinner all in one.

We enjoyed delicious burgers at this craft beer bar in Zuid. Burgers just pair well with beer, what can I say? TapZuid has 25 beers on tap and even more in the bottle. They specialize in local Amsterdam brews but also have a good selection of international ones too.

Burgerij

This burger chain from Belgium has a range of different burgers on their menu. Try the smokey bacon or the habibi with lamb. They also have a salmon burger, a chicken burger and two veggie burgers. Luckily Burgerij is conveniently located at Centraal Station so you can grab your burger before or after a train ride.
