Espressofabriek is one of the pioneers of specialty coffee in Amsterdam. They were one of the first companies to roast their own beans in-house and now perform this service for many of the new coffee places around town. The coffee is fantastic, and their Westergasfabriek space is beautiful. Indoors there are super high ceilings and you can enjoy the lovely Westerpark ambiance sitting outside when the weather is good. There is a second location in IJburg as well.

Two for Joy Coffee Roasters

Widely known for their friendly service and delicious espresso drinks, Two for Joy is sure to brighten your day with their cute bird motif. Two for Joy custom roasts their own beans, resulting in deliciously smooth coffee. Try some of their delectable eats too, like the chocolate chip rosemary cake or lemony lentil soup.

Located in a prime spot in the heart of the Negen Straatjes shopping area in the Jordaan, Screaming Beans is a cute cafe that attracts a lot of attention from passersby. Sitting in front one afternoon, we heard so many people read the name aloud then cross the street to enter the shop that we lost count. But the clever name isn’t the only thing going for the place. Their cappuccino is the favorite of many and the food is delish too! Friendly service tops off the great experience.

The two friendly, lovely ladies who own this shop make yummy espresso drinks in addition to knowing great design. The shop sells fun artwork, unique jewelry and exclusive fashions. The cafe is full of light and has plenty of arty magazines to peruse while you sip your coffee.

Coffee and tea lovers in the Oud West area love this coffeehouse on the Jan Pieter Heijestraat. Trakteren attracts a lot of great buzz for their tasty beverages and friendly smiles. The two owners have a lot of coffee knowledge and passion and are excited to share it with their customers. Simply browsing through their online photo gallery can give an idea of their coffee expertise. Have you ever seen a latte art dragon? Me neither, but I would love to sip on that!

Coffee Bru

Many say that Coffee Bru makes the best coffee on the eastside, if not in all of Amsterdam. In fact, they recently won an award for it! Stop into this cute shop for an expertly brewed coffee or their own brand of tea as well as sandwiches and pastries. Sit in the bright back room by the wall of green plants, or grab a seat outside if the weather is nice. We love their pretty blue cups, they brighten up a cloudy day.

al Ponte Caffè Italiano

Locals in Amsterdam Noord know it’s not a bad thing when you miss the ferry at IJplein. It means you have time for a delicious coffee at al Ponte. Coffee and espresso drinks are served along with a friendly “prego” from the Italian owners. Take your coffee to go for the short ferry ride to Amsterdam or drink it at one of their terrace tables and watch the action on the IJ. If you’re hungry, al Ponte also has delicious sandwiches and other snacks.

Back to Black Coffee

Bright and friendly, the cutest coffee shop in the Spiegelkwartier is Back to Black. Grab one of the seats outside or in the windows and enjoy the views of the lovely buildings and the canal. Lots of people come here to work on their laptops or have a chat, so it is often bustling.

In addition to tasty coffee, Back to Black also serves teas from Tea Bar as well as homemade cakes and treats.

Caffè il Momento

Sitting on one of the best corners on the Singel canal is Caffè il Momento, the perfect spot to stop for a cappuccino while cruising around Amsterdam. The small shop has a industrial chic look, with crumbling brick walls and raw wood furnishings contrasting with the lovely marble counters. This is one of my favorite spots for a quick coffee while doing errands in the city center. Don’t miss it!

Sweet Cup is a charming escape from the madness at nearby Leidseplein. This small shop sells coffee, tea and treats and roasts their own beans in house. Stop in for a perfectly crafted cappuccino and a chat with the friendly owners. Be sure to pet the adorable Basset Hound Sjefke.

This gourmet coffee bar and Nordic food hotspot is hidden away by Sarphatipark in De Pijp. Pop in for amazing coffee and say hi to their pup, Java. We have to say this might be the best cappuccino we’ve tasted in Amsterdam. (or the world!) They serve breakfast and lunch, the menu changes regularly and is always interesting. Think bear sausage, fresh fish, foraged greens, and hearty Scandinavian soups. This is one of the hidden gems of Amsterdam.

Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters

Lot Sixty One has locations popping up all over Amsterdam, you can now get a tasty Lot 61 coffee in a few different places. Check out their original location on Kinkerstraat in Oud West, or pop into Bouncespace/De Fietskantine for a coffee plus a haircut plus bike repairs, wow! They have a small branch in Urban Outfitters as well. Be sure to try out their delicious chocolate chip cookies, they are perfect with a cappuccino.

Bakers & Roasters makes a mean flat white and other great espresso drinks. Along with carefully crafted coffees, Bakers & Roasters serves a mouthwatering array of breakfast, brunch and lunch goodies at their cafe in De Pijp. We love the bright and cheerful interior, decorated in white and aqua with a splash of pink. Now they are open at Kadijksplein too!

The Coffee Virus

The Coffee Virus is housed in the ground floor of the A Lab office building in Amsterdam Noord. The structure was previously home to the Shell Laboratory, but was subsequently abandoned and lay derelict for several years. Now updated and refurbished, the office space is airy and light. The businesses located here are very lucky to have The Coffee Virus in their lobby to serve them lovely coffees and delicious lunches as their in-house kantine.

The Coffee Virus is currently open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00. Check it out!

Quartier Putain

A welcome addition to De Wallen, Quartier Putain serves up perfect coffee with a healthy dose of cool. Pick a tune on the jukebox to go along with your java. Operated by hip-hop record label Top Notch, whose signed acts include De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig and The Opposites, this coffee shop also hosts art exhibits, performances and other events. When wandering De Wallen, stop by this cool cafe with a view of the oldest building in the city. Gotta love the name too!

White Label Coffee

The gentlemen at White Label Coffee roast their own beans in house which often gives the shop a beautiful smell. Pop in for a quick espresso or stay awhile and hang out in their relaxed space in Amsterdam West. The coffee is excellent here, definitely one of the best in town, and they have tasty baked goods too.

Bedford Stuyvesant

They call themselves an American coffee bar, and Bedford – Stuyvesant is a little slice of cool Brooklyn style in Amsterdam Oost. In addition to perfectly crafted coffee drinks, Bed-Stuy has teas, juices and smoothies. Parents like the kiddie corner with games for the tots. We love the hanging chair and lots of green plants.

Koffieschenkerij De Oude Kerk is a wonderful small cafe housed in the oldest building in Amsterdam, the Oude Kerk. Take a seat outside in their little garden or inside in the cute cafe that used to be used to store church vestments. Koffieschenkerij has great coffee and tasty food too, go for a slice of carrot cake or some soup.  Don’t miss this charming spot next time you are in De Wallen.

Coffee & Coconuts is located in a beautiful remodeled art deco theater in de Pijp. It’s a terrific hotspot to grab a coffee, a meal or even a glass of wine or a beer. They have great coffee and nice food, and the large space has plenty of cozy nooks to hang out in with your friends or your laptop.

The decor is great for having a chat with friends – I love the beautiful pipe work spelling out the cafe’s name. The cafe also showcases work from local artists on the walls.

A great central place to meet up over a nice coffee or bring your laptop and get some work done, Koffie Academie has a super friendly owner. They roast their own coffee in house so you might be surrounded by the smell of toasting beans. Feeling hungry? Go for a sandwich or pastry!

La Boutique del Caffe Torrefazione

A sweet little coffee shop in de Pijp just up the street from Bakers & Roasters. I like their funky cozy decor and the coffee is strong and delicious. A wonderful place to come when you are feeling nostalgic for Italy, although unfortunately the espresso cannot be Italian prices. 😉
