When in Amsterdam be sure to visit one of our favorite vendors for a paper cone of piping hot patatjes.
When friends from abroad come to visit Amsterdam they often have only one food request: thick and crispy fries. You may hear them called patat or frites, but no matter the name they taste delicious.
BEST FRIES IN AMSTERDAM
The Dutch enjoy their patat with mayonnaise and also with other unique toppings. Try patatje oorlog, a conglomeration of peanut saté sauce, mayo and onions that might give your stomach a lesson about the meaning of the name (oorlog means war). Or try the patat speciaal which includes curry ketchup, mayonnaise and onion.
Vleminckx
Our very favorite place for fries, Vleminckx is a tiny hole-in-the-wall shop near Spui with a cult following. The wait in the fast-moving queue is worth your while. There is a long list of available toppings including curry ketchup, sambal, joppie and appelmoes (applesauce). Many prefer the Zaanse mayonnaise, as it has a bit of a vinegar tang.
Vleminckx Sausmeesters is my favorite place to go for fries in Amsterdam. It has a nostalgic feeling and the fries are always great!

Par Hasard
Stop by Par Hasard for a piping hot cone of potato goodness. This upscale snackbar has some of our favorites fries. Served with homemade mayonnaise, the fries are extra crispy and pair well with a beer or sparkling wine if you feel like relaxing on their terrace. And now they have two locations!

Bar Boca’s
While not your typical hole-in-the-wall patat spot, Bar Boca’s is famous for some of the tastiest fries in the city. Their trio has three different types of potato with three different dipping sauces. Pair it with your favorite wine or beer and you’ve got a great snack. Bar Boca’s is the perfect place to meet with friends for a leisurely meal and a chat but be sure to make reservations as it is always busy.
