Party with a Local asked a few cool Amsterdam residents about their favorite places to hear live music. Here are their top picks for the best live music venues and clubs in the city.

BEST MUSIC VENUES IN AMSTERDAM • PWAL PICKS

Eli Brouwer, designer, from Amsterdam:

BIMHUIS: For anyone who likes Jazz, I definitely suggest the Bimhuis! It holds more than 300 Dutch and International jazz concerts annually. It’s also a great spot to chill with your friends and listen to a good selection of music.

Jharda Walker, PA/singing harpist, from London, living in Amsterdam:

PARADISO: Definitely the best place for big concerts. Almost every time a famous band or singer comes to Amsterdam, they will play in Paradiso. Get your tickets fast though!

BITTERZOET: Check it out for cool, slightly less-well-known touring bands.

NIEUWE ANITA: A perfect venue for little acoustic sessions and local musicians.

Emma Gaskell, artist, from New York, living in Amsterdam:

THE WATER HOLE: It’s such a fun spot to enjoy small bands and also super cool for open mic nights. Ideal for a girls night out!

nieuweanita

Anna Pedersen, student, from Copenhagen, living in Amsterdam:

OCCII: For those who are searching for more alternative and independent music, this is the place. It has no central programming, instead there are several programming groups that set the agenda. The venue plays pretty much everything! Mostly indie, punk, new wave, gothic, experimental music, but also, electronic, weird pop, dance and even hardcore.

JAZZ CAFE ALTO: Simply a cozy place for all the jazz lovers!

DE CEUVEL: This one is pretty good for everything in summer. But especially, for the weekly lindy hop dance parties (usually on Wednesdays)! Normally they organize a beginner workshop at 20:00 and after, around 21:00 – it’s party time! You can come with your partner or chose one you like right on the spot. 🙂

HET CONCERTGEBOUW: Looking for a place to listen to some instrumental music? Go to Concertgebouw! It’s a beautiful and majestic venue built in 1881 that offers some amazing chamber and jazz concerts. And of course, stay tuned for Robecco Summer nights. During July & August, try not to miss the classical and jazz performances and also cabaret nights and film scores.

HANNEKES BOOM: Many people know this bar because of its beer and tasty snacks by the waterside, but actually Hannekes is much more than that. The venue reserves one Sunday a month to play classical music to all the alcohol lovers. Don’t miss it!

Evy Beekers, student, from Rotterdam, lives in Amsterdam:

MELKWEG: Just an amazing concert venue if you wanna see any famous or a local band. Not very big, but good size enough to get close to the stage and enjoy your favourite singer right in front of you.

pacificparc

Eef Pauw, student, from Amsterdam:

PACIFIC PARC: Beer, snacks and rock’n’roll! Isn’t that all you really need this summer?! They have great terrace and some pretty amazing DJs sometimes too!

Izaac Somers, Community Manager at Party with a Local, from Australia:

OT301: It’s a really good venue to see some cool indie-rock bands! As the place used to be a squat in the past, it has a very unpretentious vibe, which makes it even cooler and “grungier”. Definitely a spot to hit during the week.

RADION: The best place for the weekend. Pretty cool combination of smoke, lights & sound system. The only bad point is that the venue is a bit far away from the centre – around 30 min by bike. But if my favourite DJ is playing, it’s worth some exercise! lol

CLUB CLOSURE: It’s quite “closure” to my house actually 😛 But I love it because the place has the music that I enjoy the most – deep house & electronic, nice and cool atmosphere and a very good looking crowd.
