AWESOME AMSTERDAM

BETHANIENKLOOSTER AMSTERDAM CONCERTHALL

ART & CULTURE, CENTRUM, MUSIC & CLUBS

The Bethaniënklooster is a renovated medieval building in the center of Amsterdam near the Nieuwmarkt. This former convent hosts chamber music concerts and other events in their beautiful halls.

The Bethaniënklooster has been a concert venue since the year 2000. With more than 120 concerts a year attracting nearly 10,000 visitors, the Bethaniënklooster has become an integral part of Amsterdam’s cultural life.

The Bethaniënklooster was originally built in the 1500s as a convent dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene of Bethany. The convent was intended as a haven for women who wanted to do penance for a dissolute life. This original purpose is interesting considering the building’s contemporary location in the heart of the Red Light District.

The convent’s refectory, or dining room, was located above the basement and the dormitory was located on the second floor. Under the lovely oak wood ceiling of the former dormitory there is now a unique auditorium with excellent acoustics.

The renovated basement is located under the auditorium. The 15th-century vaults are evidence of the building’s history. This crypt runs under the old refectory and preserves the character of the former convent.
