GARTINE

A tiny cafe on a side street in the center of Amsterdam, Gartine serves up slow food style breakfast, lunch and tea with an abundance of charm.

GARTINE • CHARMING AND DELICIOUS LUNCH CAFE

Gartine is a hidden find located on a small street in the midst of the bustling center of Amsterdam. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 18:00 they serve late breakfast, lunch and tea, prepared with love.

Your meal at Gartine will likely include fruits, vegetables and herbs from the owners’ garden as well as local heritage foods from the Slow Food Ark of Taste. This food philosophy has its roots in Italy and is becoming more popular in many parts of the world. The gist of the philosophy is that fresh local ingredients often taste better and have a lesser environmental impact than foods shipped across the globe.

But no matter your position on the ethical issues, there is no denying that Gartine serves a delicious meal. The lunch menu consists of fresh and unique sandwiches, soups and salads. Breakfast is served from 10:00 to noon and high tea from 14:00 to 17:00. No matter what time you dine, the cakes and tarts will tempt you from the display case. The prices are also quite affordable, with a nice lunch for two amounting to about €25.

Service is friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is quietly charming. Softly lit and decorated with assorted antiques, Gartine is a wonderful spot for a girly lunch or tea and cake. Your meal is served on pretty china plates, and we absolutely loved the quirky antique forks and knives that accompanied our heavenly slice of chocolate tart.

The small cafe has about seven tables, so reservations are a must.
