KOFFIESCHENKERIJ DE OUDE KERK • OASIS OF CALM IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
Hidden away in plain sight in the heart of one of the city’s busiest areas is a secret garden and a lovely lunchroom and coffee shop. Koffieschenkerij De Oude Kerk is a wonderful small cafe housed in the oldest building in Amsterdam, the Oude Kerk.
This impressive stone church was originally built around the year 1300. The space where the Koffieschenkerij is now located was added on in the 1500s and was originally used as the sacristy, the place where the priests kept their vestments, church records and other precious items.
Now the sacristy and adjoining garden have become a charming cafe, a hidden jewel in De Wallen. Come by for delicious cakes and tarts, coffee, juice and lunch!
The friendly owners, Job and Anne, strive to purchase organic and local items. Sometimes they even have products from the church gardens! The Koffieschenkerij also serves a special soup made by victims of human trafficking who are being trained in culinary skills to prepare them for new lives. Visit Not for Sale to learn more about this wonderful program.
This cafe is really a special place in the heart of Amsterdam. Take a walk through De Wallen to see all the wonderful new shops, galleries and cafes that are popping up all around. You will surely be pleasantly surprised.
