Marqt’s mission is to sell ethical food that is produced with respect for people, the environment and animals. The stores are designed using natural materials and are clean, spacious and bright. Marqt does not accept cash payments, only PIN, credit and chipcards. They say this is to reduce delays and mistakes at the registers, as well as eliminating the need for cash transport trucks. There are currently 4 stores in Amsterdam, and it seems more are popping up all the time.

EkoPlaza

One of the largest organic grocers in the Netherlands, EkoPlaza has 11 locations in Amsterdam alone. The supermarket carries a wide assortment of bio products, as well as gluten-free and sugar-free foods. Some stores, like the one on Elandsgracht, even have a bulk section with grains and nuts. Many items at EkoPlaza are store brand, making prices a bit lower than competitors.

An adorable health food store in the Jordaan, Delicious Food is a small shop with all the organic products you need. We really like this store because they stock a great selection of bulk foods! Hooray for less plastic waste! Nuts, grains, pasta and even olive oil can be purchased in bulk. A small selection of fruits, veggies, raw treats, superfoods, and baked goods are also available.

Natuurwinkel BioMarkt

At BioMarkt all products are 100% organic, everything sold in the store carries the EKO or Demeter certification. They sell biological wine and household and personal care products in addition to fruits and veggies. BioMarkt is located on Weteringschans near the end of Vijzelgracht.

Estafette

Estafette means “relay” referring to the race where participants pass the baton from one to another. Estafette uses this as an analogy for cooperation between organic farmers and producers, the wholesaler, the staff in the shop and the customers. With 4 locations in Amsterdam and nearly 20 locations in the Netherlands, Estafette sells organic and biodynamic vegetables and fruits, as well as meats, cheeses and household products.

AMSTERDAM ORGANIC FARMERS MARKETS

Noordermarkt Boerenmarkt

Every Saturday from 9am to 16:00 the crowds gather in front of the Noorderkerk on the Prinsengracht side to shop at the organic farmers market. Of course there is an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits to choose from, along with baked goods, eggs, cheeses, meats, fish and prepared foods. Our favorite stand is probably the mushroom vendor, although the cheeses and bakeries are also tempting.

ZuiderMRKT

If you live on the South or the East side of Amsterdam, the ZuiderMRKT is another option for a Saturday organic farmers market. This market is located in Oud-Zuid at the square by Johannes Verhulststraat and Jacob Obrechtstraat. You’ll find a variety of biological fruits and veggies as well as prepared foods, baked goods, meats, eggs and cheeses.

Biologische Versmarkt Nieuwmarkt

There is a smaller organic market located on Saturdays at the Nieuwmarkt. Located at the foot of the historic Waag, the Nieuwmarkt square was created in 1614 when the canals here were filled in. The square was historically used as a market for fish and Asian products. Today you can buy organic bread, vegetables, fruits and cheeses on Saturdays from 10am to 6pm.

Haarlemmerplein Boerenmarkt

Every Wednesday a biological farmers market takes place on the Haarlemmerplein at the end of Haarlemmerstraat. This smaller market is a great place to buy fresh foods mid-week, and is not too busy and crowded. Buy fruits, veggies, meats, fish, flowers and other groceries here from 10am to 5pm.

Geitenboerderij De Ridammerhoeve

In the middle of Amsterdamse Bos park lies the organic, biodynamic goat farm. Open most days from 10-17:00 (check website for hours), they sell organic goat milk, freshly made organic goat cheese, ice cream, yogurt and butter, as well as biodynamic chicken eggs. On Saturdays after 10am they also host a small organic farmer’s market.
