Looking for a completely unique place to eat? Check out the REM Eiland restaurant! Dine 22 meters above the IJ in an old pirate television tower.
REM EILAND • DINNER WITH A VIEW
REM Eiland offers not only delicious food and an amazing view, but also an interesting glimpse into the history of broadcasting in the Netherlands. Before the 1960s there was only one Dutch broadcasting channel. Viewers who desired something different were out of luck until some clever entrepreneurs realized that they could broadcast from the seas. At first this was done from ships in international waters, but then from an artificial island just outside government control known as REM Eiland. This 80 meter high platform broadcast crazy shows like Mr. Ed and Rin Tin Tin. Only a few months after launching, TV Noordzee was shut down by the Dutch government and REM Eiland was used as monitoring post.
Several years ago the tower was dismantled and brought to shore for demolition. Again, entrepreneurs saw value in the structure and decided to renovate it and place it in the harbor to become an unusual restaurant.
Head out to the Houthavens to find this unique spot. You can’t miss the striking red and white tower sitting in the water. Walk out on the metal bridge and up the stairs and look out over the amazing view of Amsterdam. On a clear evening you’ll see the NDSM area across the water in Noord and all the way to the office buildings in Zuid. We loved watching the twinkling lights at night from all sides of the restaurant.
REM Eiland is open for lunch and dinner. The menu is “European” and consists of seasonal ingredients thoughtfully combined into fantastic dishes. The lunch menu has tasty sandwiches and salads, or go for the seafood platter with oysters, mussels and clams. At dinner you can choose the 3- or 4-course meal or go a la carte. Portions are generous and the food is delicious!
If you are looking for an unusual place to dine, REM Eiland is a terrific choice. A perfect place for seasoned travelers looking for something different, or a great lunch or dinner spot to take out of town visitors. But it’s also wonderful for just enjoying amazing sunset views over the IJ or waterside breezes on a warm summer evening.
You can even get to REM Eiland with your boat! Cool!
