SLA • GET HEALTHY WITH SALADS, JUICES & MORE
After what seemed like a long wait, a few summers ago SLA opened its doors in de Pijp to the hungry crowds craving a healthy meal. Not long after, a second location opened in the center on Westerstraat. And now there are a total of six locations in Amsterdam where you can get your salad fix.
Inspired by visits to create-your-own salad bars in New York, owners Nina and Jop have imported this popular dining concept to Amsterdam. Choose from their fresh salad fixings to create your own meal or choose one of their favorites from the menu. All ingredients at SLA are organic when possible, and there is a wide range to choose from. Top the basic butter lettuce with greens of your choice including rucola, spinach or chard, then pick a grain or bean like quinoa, bulghur or lentils. Mix in three more veggies and maybe a meat or cheese, and then select one of their flavorful dressings to top it all off.
On our first visit we concocted our own delicious salad including roasted pumpkin, sauteed mushrooms and quinoa topped with the cumin laced garlic dressing. A successful first try, the salad was fresh and light but also satisfying. SLA’s favorite salads are also a hit, try their smoked mackrel or vegetarian “chicken” versions for hearty meal options, or enjoy the homemade soups and sandwiches.
In addition to salads SLA also serves yummy fresh juices. We tried the sweet and delicious Rode Sap, which is a refreshing mix of beet juice with pomegranate and ginger. One of the best juice combinations we have ever tasted! If you’re in the mood for something slightly more sinful than a fruit or veggie juice, SLA also serves organic wines, beers and coffee.
Prices are reasonable, making SLA a place you could go every day for a healthy meal. They are often quite busy at both lunch and early dinner.
The decor inside SLA matches the freshness of the food. The bright white interior is dotted with green plants and interesting artworks. Check out the bowls made by Renee Boute out of waste vegetables. And don’t miss the cute WC for a dose of green charm in an unexpected place.
The secret garden in the back is a quiet oasis from the busy Ceintuurbaan in de Pijp location, perhaps a few vegetables for the restaurant will also be grown here. SLA also holds healthy cooking workshops and other activities in their lovely spaces. We look forward to these as well as many future meals at SLA, a very welcome addition to Amsterdam’s casual eateries!
And if you plan a day trip to Haarlem, Utrecht or Den Haag, SLA has locations there too.
