VOLDAAN • SOEP MET BALLEN
Tucked away on the busy J P Heijestraat is cozy cafe Voldaan. Owner Matthijs opened this new little hotspot in Autumn 2013 and those who have discovered it happily return for more.
The menu is relatively simple, choose small, medium or large portions of soup and meat or veggie balls, or select one of the sandwiches or salads. Each dish is perfectly spiced and accompanied by sauces and sides that will tantalize your tastebuds.
We sampled the red pepper soup accompanied by Italian meatballs in a tomato sauce. The soup was extremely smooth and creamy and had a wonderful complex flavor. We also tried the so-called Arabic meal, consisting of a lentil soup with lamb meatballs. Both dishes were lovely! The meatballs were infused with green herbs and sliced almonds and came with a sweet apricot chutney. Lentil soup could sound rather boring to some but the spicy green sauce added an amazing kick of flavor.
Currently there are two meals that come with non-meat balls, the pumpkin and goat cheese balls and lentil and eggplant balls. Both sound delicious and we’ll be sure to try them next time. Sandwiches and salads are also on the menu, and they are very tempting. We’ll have to return and sample them all!
You can wash your meal down with organic beer from Gulpener, a glass of wine or a Bionade soda. If you have room in your tummy, try the creative raw desserts, like pumpkin pie or choco fudge.
Did you know that voldaan means “satisfied” or “content”? We think that is the perfect description of how you feel after a meal here. Not hungry or stuffed too full, but perfectly satisfied. Try it soon!
